چکیده

Abstract Luria (Luria, Cognitive development: Its cultural and social foundations, Harvard University Press, 1976) famously observed that people who never learnt to read write do not perceive visual illusions. We conducted a conceptual replication of the study effect literacy on processing designed two carefully controlled experiments with 161 participants varying levels ranging from complete illiterates high literates in Chennai, India. Accuracy reaction time identification shape color illusions appropriate control images were measured. Separate statistical analyses Experiments 1 2 as well pooled both provide any support for notion affects perception Our large sample, strongly suggests does meaningfully affect raises some questions about other reports effects illusion perception.

Conceptual illusions.

Many concepts depend on negation and on relations such as conjunction and disjunction, as in the concept: rich or not democratic. This article reports studies that elucidate the mental representation of such concepts from descriptions of them. It proposes a theory based on mental models, which represent only instances of a concept, and for each instance only those properties, affirmative or neg...

Do Sense Experiential States Have Conceptual Content?

I take it for granted that sense experiential states provide reasons for empirical beliefs; indeed this claim forms the first premise of my central argument for (CC). 1 The subsequent stages of the argument are intended to establish that a person has such a reason for believing something about the way things are in the world around him only if he is in some mental state or other with a conceptu...

Do pre-performance routines have a role in free throws accuracy of basketball players?

A significant portion of research exploring pre-performance routines in sport has focused on the behavioral and temporal characteristics of the routines. This study aimed to investigate the role of behavioral and temporal consistency in those pre-performance routines. The duration and dominant behavioral patterns exhibited before each free throw (N = 1025) were observed during a total of 60 Ira...

Do visual illusions probe the visual brain? Illusions in action without a dorsal visual stream.

Visual illusions have been shown to affect perceptual judgements more so than motor behaviour, which was interpreted as evidence for a functional division of labour within the visual system. The dominant perception-action theory argues that perception involves a holistic processing of visual objects or scenes, performed within the ventral, inferior temporal cortex. Conversely, visuomotor action...

Do action systems resist visual illusions?

Arguments about the relative independence of visual modules in the primate brain are not new. Recently, though, these debates have resurfaced in the form of arguments about the extent to which visuomotor reaching and grasping systems are insensitive to visual illusions that dramatically bias visual perception. The first wave of studies of illusory effects on perception and action have supported...
